Kelly McGarry’s Redbull Rampage experience
The rider tells us about his last exploits of the season and greets us, inviting us to follow him next year too.
I’m back home at the bottom of the world in NZ, it’s great to be back and I'm pumped to keep it summer for another 6 months.
The last section of my season in North America worked out to be pretty epic, after Crankworx Whistler we stayed for another month, just riding bikes on the mountain and going on a few trips close to Whistler and training for Red Bull Rampage.
Then it was onto Utah for the biggest event of the year, the Red Bull Rampage.
After showing up 3 years in a row in the past and not having the best luck (breaking my leg in 2012 three days before the event!) I was keen to set the record straight.
In 2012 I dug my line that led to the canyon and never got to hit it, so I had some unfinished business over there. So I dug my qualifying line leading into the canyon gap for 2013.
Qualifying went good, my second run landed me into the Rampage finals for the first time ever!
On the day of finals we showed up and it was blowing a gale! I thought the event would be postponed for sure, but to my surprise they made the call that we would go ahead. Everyone was not feeling good about it for an hour or so, but then the wind died down pretty well and we got our stoke on!
Finals runs started and it was hectic from the get go, everyone was riding so well with massive lines and moves gettin thrown down every run. When Cam Zink back flipped down the 50 ft Oakley sender I knew people were pulling out the stops and going for broke!
I was the last rider to drop and was feeling pretty nervous, the starter dude called my name and it was go time, I dropped in with a few things up the ol sleeve!
Check out my run from my point of view right here:
That run landed me in 2nd place which I was stoked on!
We headed back up the hill for another run but unfortunately the wind came up and the event organisers had to can the second runs halfway through.
So 2nd place at the 2013 Rampage is where I ended up and I also won the viewers choice award, it was pretty cool to know everyone out there liked my run! I was pretty pumped on the whole deal, I even slammed a bit of cash in the ol’ back pocket. Yeeeow!
The Red Bull Rampage result along with my other results this season landed me in the top 10 overall on the FMB world tour. I'm stoked to bits on that, as it has always been a dream of mine to top 10 the tour!
All in all 2013 has been a great year on my bike, I've done a lot of travel to some amazing spots, I've met some great new friends and I've met up with some great old ones at different locations on the globe. The comp scene was fun, so many cool courses to ride on the circuit these days and to do good at a few comps felt great. Top 10 on the FMB is something I always wanted to achieve and I did it this year so that was the icing on the cake.
I am more motivated than ever to get back out on my bike in 2014 for more shenanigans, starting with another NZ summer packed with adventures.
I couldn't even get out the front door without the help of all my sponsors so massive thanks to you guys!
See you out there!
It’s been a though, wonderful year, our dear Kelly. Go get some rest! And see you next season.
