Andreu Lacondeguy wins VW Best Trick at Whistler’s Crankworx Slopestyle event 2009

Whistler, August 18th – Andreu Lacondeguy proves once again why he is one of the best freeriders in the world. The 20year old Kona rider from Spain won the VW Best Trick at Whistler’s Crankworx Slopestyle event. He impressed not only the judges, but more than 20,000 people with a 360flatspin seatgrab indian air, a trick that was shown the first time in mountain bike history! The victory was honoured with 6,000 Dollars. Greg Watts wins the Crankworx Slopestyle with the strongest run of his career

Whistler’s Crankworx Slopestyle event was again the biggest freeride event of the year. Nine days packed with mountain bike gravity events had their peak last Saturday during the Slopestyle showdown. In total 16 riders entered the Slopestyle finals and each rider had two runs to show off his goods. Andreu Lacondeguy was the defending crankworx champion of 2008. After having surgery on his scaphoid in end of May of the current season, Andreu came to Whistler with less training throughout the year on his bike. Nevertheless he was looking good and pushing it hard. He took 8th place with his best run in the finals. After having a crash in his second run on the first part of the course, he knew that he can still win the VW Best Trick. So he showed the first 360 flatspin seatgrab indian air ever performed on a mountain bike. The judges called it as well as the announcers and thousands of spectators.

The other riders were also showing big moves and it was a difficult decision to judge who has really done the craziest and best trick. The top three of the actual slopestyle results were throwing down big: Greg Watts did a 360whip off the start step down drop, a 360barspin off another drop and a flipwhip on a dirt jump in the same run. Also Brandon Semenuk did a flipwhip on the course. Martin Soederstroem showed off with solid double tailwhips and 360whips at the dirt jumps. But the prize went to Andreu Lacondeguy. The Best Trick was part of the contest, so the biggest trick of all runs was awarded with 6,000 Dollars

Andreu about his victory: “It was a tough day today. We had not much practise on the course and it was windy. I have been working on that trick for a while and I wanted to show it at Crankworx. I am super stoked that I nailed it here in front of the freeride world!’’

Andreu Lacondeguy and his brother Lluis are now on their way through the west of North America. They both will go on a film trip for NWD 10 along with riders like Brandon Semenuk, Robbie Bourdon, Wayne Goss and Paul Basagoitia. For two weeks the riders will be on a motor home trip to check the best spots and film some amazing shots. Their trip ends in San Francisco with a big dirt jump session.
